HRB health research award for NUI Galway researcher

Dr Emer McGrath of NUI Galway has been awarded a clinician scientist fellowship as part of the Health Research Board (HRB) €3.7 million investment in 12 new health research fellowships. Dr McGrath was awarded €655,524 for her research into blood-based biomarkers for early detection of preclinical neurocognitive disorders.

These fellowships are designed to support health and care practitioners as they transition towards research leadership, while balancing their clinical commitments. The award to Dr McGrath will fund a new academic consultant neurologist post based at NUI Galway and Galway University Hospital. Dr McGrath will lead a large, international, cross-collaborative, research study involving a team of investigators based at the HRB-CRFG, NUI Galway, the Framingham Heart Study, Boston University, the Population Health Research Institute, McMaster University, Canada, Trinity College Dublin, and the Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases at the University of Texas San Antonio.

One of the most rewarding feelings a person can experience is that of knowing you are helping people to better themselves. This is exactly the feeling I myself experienced every Tuesday during the college year after completing my hour of reading with the children of fourth class at a primary school in Galway city. Being able to play a part in a child’s education, especially during his/her formative years, is a responsibility that I do not take lightly. Knowing that I am helping these children, many of whom do not receive reading support at home or have little access to resources such as books to develop their education and enhance their reading abilities, is definitely a privilege.

The programme I take part in is a university module I do as part of my second year studies in English at NUI Galway. ‘Service Learning-Literacy Lift Off! Reading with Children’ is a seminar course, where students such as myself support fourth class pupils with their reading in a supervised classroom setting. We also participate in a seminar class each week which allows us to reflect on our experiences in the school earlier that week. I decided to take this module because I have always considered primary teaching as a future career, and having worked with children before, I really enjoyed it. Each university student is assigned to a group of between one and three children to help with their reading. One of my personal aims as an educator in this setting was to instil as much confidence as I could in these children. Many of them come from socio-economically disadvantaged areas and because of their circumstances have fewer opportunities than their counterparts growing up in other areas.

GCC offers further education courses for employment and progression

The Leaving Certificate Class of 2020 have faced unprecedented challenges in recent months, with the initial postponement of the Leaving Certificate and the subsequent predictive grading system rather than the usual exams. Employees too have faced challenges, finding themselves unemployed or facing uncertain job security from the Covid-19 pandemic, causing everyone to reevaluate their options regarding their future career paths.

Galway Community College of Further Education (GCC) offers full-time courses in a wide variety of vocational areas, designed as a step towards skilled employment or progression to higher education institutes and universities. All courses offer a mix of practical and portfolio work and work experience. There are no CAO points required for further education courses. On completion, you can convert your results from the course to apply for more than 1,200 CAO courses that will accept a QQI award for progression to institutes of technology and universities nationwide. GCC's Level 6 courses give direct access to some second-year courses in GMIT.
