Travel the world

Thu, Oct 06, 2016

Teaching English as a foreign language, or TEFL, is a popular choice among graduates who want to go travelling or people wishing to change career. "The most recognised TEFL qualification in the world is the University of Cambridge CELTA," says IH Galway director Mary Grennan. "The CELTA was the first ever TEFL course. It’s been in existence since 1962 when it was designed by the founder of International House, John Haycraft, so there’s a lot of history and intellectual knowledge there. Unlike other TEFL courses, CELTA tutors are highly qualified teacher trainers and each course is externally assessed by a nominated Cambridge assessor, who comes to the centre to assess each course we run. This makes the CELTA a highly reliable qualification that schools and universities worldwide can trust. For this reason, 87 per cent of the English language teaching positions advertised around the world request the CELTA qualification – and no other one."

Opportunities abound at St Mary’s College

Thu, Oct 06, 2016

St Mary’s College will hold an open evening this evening October 6 at 6.30pm. All prospective students and their parents are welcome to attend; the evening promises to be a showcase of what St Mary’s College has to offer, and what sets it apart from any other school in the city.

St Mary’s offers a strong curriculum affording students the opportunity to study at the highest levels across an array of subject areas. The impressive facilities at St Mary’s are unrivalled in Galway city — the school is set on some 40 acres of beautifully maintained surroundings, recently lauded by An Taisce as one of the best kept grounds in Galway city. There are Gaelic and soccer pitches, basketball and tennis courts, fitness suite, weights room, a nationally recognised cross-country course, indoor and outdoor handball courts, as well as two sports halls.

Galway’s streets ‘are full of Confederates’

Thu, Oct 06, 2016

Despite the challenges, dangers, bankruptcies, and in some cases, exploitation, by the mid 19th century Galway had a small but profitable fleet of sailing ships. In previous weeks I have outlined some of the achievements and failures of the Galway Line, which between 1858 and 1864 completed a total of 55 trouble free return voyages to New York and Boston. One of its ships, the Circassian, which I discussed last week, sailed from Galway on September 21 1859 to New York with 342 passengers of whom 108 were first class. One hundred and seventy persons who applied for passage were turned away as the ship was full.

Milano on Middle Street

Thu, Sep 29, 2016

It is easy to see why many parents of young children avoid restaurants and prefer to eat at home. The thrown food will hit only members of the immediate family, and few things match the embarrassment of a meltdown in a restaurant. But sometimes it’s necessary, and even fun, to eat out. Many parents want to dine out in a way that doesn’t involve plastic trays or eating leftover cocktail sausages while watching over your child in a pool of multi-coloured balls. It is important to choose a child-friendly restaurant, preferably one casual and loud enough to absorb any noise your little darlings might make. Years ago, before Dominos had come to town and Papa Johns was not even invented, there were only two options for pizza, for two different stages of your life. Monroe’s in Dominick Street was our preference for a slice before children, a great pre– or post–pub spot. In Galway, when you first have a baby, the traditional starting point is Milano on Middle Street.

Have you ever had a birthday coming up and been asked by your significant other, parents or children what you would like as a gift?
