Galway fires

Thu, Sep 08, 2016

The Connaught Buildings on Mainguard Street originally housed Connolly’s, one of the largest hardware and fancy goods shops in Galway. It had an impressive four storey facade on the front and five storeys on the Church Street side. In 1934 the ground floor was leased by four tenants. A fire started on the first floor, the flames spread rapidly, and smoke could be seen rolling from the building. Half clad figures fought their way bravely down the stairs which threatened to give away any minute. The damage was extensive and estimated at £1,000, but much of the sum was made up of the stock of the ground floor tenants which included a lock-up fruit and vegetable shop rented by Mr P Hennigan. A Mr McDonnell and his brother had a tailoring business on the first floor.

Justice at last for the Indian Empire incident?

Thu, Sep 08, 2016

Despite the excitement, the prospects, the agreement to carry mail, and new luxury ships, the Galway transatlantic adventure headed by J. Orwell Lever ended in failure within six years.

But, as Tim Collins wrote in an earlier article,* ‘as an historic failure, its record is impressive. Ultimately the Galway Line employed 16 steamers (eight paddle-powered, and eight screw-powered) which made a total of 55 return voyages across the Atlantic between 1858 and 1864. The voyages were made during winter months as well as during the calmer summer sailing season. Six ships were involved in serious accidents due to ice and fog as well as storms, while five made only one trip, or foundered on their first crossing.**

Lose weight the right way with Clifden Slimming World

Thu, Sep 08, 2016

Super slimmers in Clifden have lost a whopping 1,951lb (139 stone) in weight — that is the equivalent of 10 small cars! Altogether the members of the Clifden Slimming World group are now 1,951lb lighter than they were at the beginning of 2016. The members, who attend the group every week, follow Slimming World’s food optimising eating plan created by the organisation’s team of expert nutritionists, which encourages them to fill up on satisfying foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, pulses, and fruit and veg.

Filling up on lots of satisfying foods means you are never hungry, so you never feel as though you are on a diet. People think losing weight means going to the gym and counting calories, and depriving yourself of food. It is about making healthier choices about food and becoming a bit more active.

Climbing and Rambling Roses

Thu, Sep 01, 2016

In Tralee last week for the Rose Festival I noticed a great many beds of roses in full bloom throughout the town, well looked after and flowering freely. Many Irish gardens feature rose bushes in one form or another, and the brightly coloured shrub roses, floribundas and hybrid teas brighten the front gardens of our towns and villages throughout the summer. But it’s the climbing and rambling roses that really seem to appeal to the romantics. Many of the clients who call me in to produce garden plans have visions of softly coloured roses tumbling over an archway leading into an idyllic cottage style garden, or gracefully clothing an old stone wall – pretty and nostalgic, it’s an image that’s hard to resist and it’s a great pleasure to help them achieve this.

Lunchtime value at The Cellar

Thu, Sep 01, 2016

The Cellar has existed as a bar since the seventies when pubs were mostly for drinking in, and it was a more Bohemian place entirely then, a hotbed of music with Irish artists such as Mickey Finn and Frankie Gavin regularly playing there. It has changed hands a few times since then, in recent years becoming well known also as a casual restaurant which closed down at the end of 2010. It was not destined to stay closed for long and reopened in its current reincarnation in April 2011.

I have a soft spot for The Cellar Bar, and I doubt that I am the only one. I have been there during the last two refurbishments, seeing its transformation from a dingy watering hole to a modern venue offering good value food and lively nightlife. There can be few people who spent time in college in Galway in recent years who have not had the ‘all day breakfast’ at least once. The location makes it a great city centre meeting spot for lunch or for after-work drinks. And of course, most importantly, the food is that rare combination of good and fast.
