Alleviating neck and shoulder pain by professional manipulation and acupuncture

Thu, Oct 13, 2016

Neck and shoulder pains are common complaints. Some people experience only neck pain or only shoulder pain, while others experience pain in both areas. Other associated symptoms can be headaches, numbness, tingling, poor sleep patterns, or more severe symptoms such as anxiety or depression. Symptoms vary from person to person. While some lead relatively normal lives, others are unable to work and limited in their capabilities, which can particularly disrupt their quality of life.

Neck pain can be caused by spinal problems. Muscular tightness in both the neck and upper back, pinching of the nerves emanating from the cervical vertebare, or cervical joint disruption can create pain. It may arise due to car accidents, such as whiplash, sporting events, and day to day minor injuries. Neck pain may also arise from many other physical and emotional health problems. The shoulder joint is susceptible to injury. While underlying causes such as frozen shoulder remain unclear, shoulder pain can stem from different causes such as occupational overexertion and overuse, pinched nerves, degeneration, and injury.

Mícheál Walsh, patriot

Thu, Oct 13, 2016

Mícheál Walsh was a native of Headford who bought the Old Malt pub and grocery in High Street c1906. He was a Republican and a member of the Urban Council. He once proposed at a meeting that the idea of toll booths, of collecting tolls from people bringing goods into the city, should be extended to include the docks in order that they might levy any ships coming in to the docks, including Navy vessels. This was too much for his fellow (Unionist) councillor Joe Young, who protested, “Sure if that was the way, no British naval vessel would ever come in to the docks.” “I rest my case,” said Mr Walsh.

Waiting at Tiffany’s on Broadway

Thu, Oct 13, 2016

In the Diary of September 22 I asked whether the ‘gallant and humane’ Captain John Wilson of the The Minnie Schiffer, who miraculously snatched from certain death 591 passengers and crew from the burning PS Connaught, ever received the ‘elegant service of plate’ especially commissioned for him from the prestigious Tiffany and Co of Broadway, New York. The plate was paid for by the merchants of New York and Boston ‘in appreciation of his gallant conduct at sea’ on that fateful evening October 8 1860.

The Minnie Schiffer was a small brig, returning from the south of France with a cargo of fruit and wine. About 100 miles out of Boston she came across the drifting PS Connaught practically blazing from head to stern. Its passengers and crew faced a certain and terrible death. The burning ship was too hot and dangerous to set alongside. Instead ‘in a space of about eight hours during the increasing murk of a stormy October evening - and all accomplished without loss of life, despite the hundreds of persons involved, many of whom must have been stressed, disorientated and terrified’, Capt Wilson ferried the despairing people across to his brig, in life boats.
