•The Sean Purcell Academy Day takes place this year on Saturday and will be hosted by Tuam. This annual event is a blitz day for all intercounty u-14 academy players which will see 13 teams from six counties taking part. The participating players have been chosen after a selection process. The games will be played at two venues in Tuam, Tuam Stadium and the Tuam Stars ground, commencing at 11am.

• Galway’s Greg Cunningham, who continues to impress at Manchester City, has agreed a new four-years deal at the club. The 19-years-old, who signed from Mervue United in 2007, made his Ireland debut in May and played for 30 minutes against Argentina last week. It has been an “ unbelievable year” for him, he says. “To get this new deal sorted and win my first full cap for my country has exceeded all my expectations. I’m delighted to have signed a new deal with City. Now I need to impress the manager as much as I can and get as much game time as I can, too.”

•With local soccer leagues set to kick off over the next two to three weeks, registration day for Knockncarra FC takes place this Saturday from 1pm in the clubhouse at Cappagh Park , Cappagh Road. Club members will be on hand to answer all questions and parents are asked to bring birth certificates for their children. A number of new teams have been added this season as the club continues to grow. As a result new coaches, managers, and supervisors are needed. Galway Golf Club’s Eddie McCormack (+3) has been included in the team to represent Ireland in the Home Internationals that take place at Ashburnham Golf Club, Wales from August 11 to 13. The Cavan golfer, who plays out of the Galway club, has enjoyed consistent form throughout 2010 - a beaten finalist in the West of Ireland, third-round leader in the East of Ireland championship, and two singles wins for Connacht in the recent interprovincial series at Ballinrobe Golf club.
