There was mixed fortunes for Maree BC in cup action on Saturday, withthe men’s Superleague side bowing out of the Pat Duffy Cup when losing 83-80 at home to Griffith College Swords Thunder. However the club’s senior women are through to the Hula Hoops division one cup quarter-finals, thanks to an 86-59 win at home to Phoenix Rockets of Belfast.
That was the fourth win from four for the senior women’s side, who now face Limerick Celtics in the last eight of the competition in Limerick next month.

A record number of teams will contest this season’s Top Oil Connacht Schools Cups which will be officially launched later this week.
In total there are 61 teams across 37 schools taking part in this year’s tournaments, with the opening pool games taking place on Wednesday January 16. More pool games over successive weeks will determine who will go on to the knockout stages.

It took them two games and extra-time to get there, however An Spidéal did just enough to see off near neighbours Micheál Breathnach’s last weekend at Pearse Stadium in an enthralling contest and be crowned Galway intermediate champions for 2018.
They fully merited their 1-13 to 1-11win, especially as they were reduced to 14 players after a red card just before half-time, and as a result of this famous victory, the West Board club will play senior football in 2019.

Good news for Connacht this week. Lock Quinn Roux, who has been a key force this season, has signed a new two-year deal with the province.
The 27-year-old South African with six Ireland caps first arrived in Connacht on loan from Leinster in 2014 and made his Ireland debut two seasons later. When asked about the extension Roux said: "Yeah, I feel like I have had a massive season so far, and it's obviously nice to get the contract sorted at this time of the year and getting that out of the way and just focus on my performances every week. So yeah, I'm delighted to be in Galway for another two seasons."
