From the throw in, this county semi-final between Mountbellew/Moylough and Caltra sparkled. The local rivals tore into each other with a passion and fervour that had both sets of supporters on their toes for the majority of the contest.
Mountbellew deployed big Joe Bergin on the edge of the square from the start, and that tactical move was to prove decisive as he caused mammoth problems for Enda Meehan.

Maree Basketball Club hit the ground running in the first big tournament of the 2009/10 season. On Saturday in Gurranabraher they retained the u-20 Cork Open Cup which they had won for the first time last season, winning all five games.

Last Sunday was a fantastic day for Galway hurling.Winning a hurling All-Ireland final, senior, u-21, or minor is a wonderful thing for a county, but beating Kilkenny in the final at Croke Park makes it a little sweeter.

Well done to Mattie Murphy for the invaluable commitment and service he has given to Galway hurling for the past few decades. To manage your county to five All-Ireland minor titles is a magnificent achievement and hopefully there will be more to come. He was very astute and cool on the sideline again last weekend and he made some terrific tactical adjustments in the last quarter when things needed to be freshened up. It is hard to beat experience, especially in the cauldron of Croke Park on All-Ireland final day and Murphy has it in spades now.
