Galway defeat snatched from the jaws of victory

Thu, Jul 30, 2009

For nearly an hour everything was going to plan, but it all unravelled in the crucial last 13 minutes. Six points ahead Galway were motoring well, Waterford were in deep bother, and the signs suggested that the maroons would close the deal for the third week in succession.

Waterford, though, ploughed on defiantly. Dan Shanahan was summoned from the bench, and announced his arrival with an early fetch under pressure. Shanahan dragged his shot wide, but he remained cool, and gathered a few more aerial deliveries which ultimately ensured it was Waterford who prevailed.

It’s now shoulders to the wheel for Galway footballers

Thu, Jul 23, 2009

Galway footballers, beaten last Sunday, now face Donegal this Saturday at 5pm in Markievicz Park.

At a small stretch it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that they will beat Donegal, but then in the last eight they will face either Tyrone, Cork, or Dublin. Three necessary improvements

Thu, Jul 23, 2009

1.The amount of ball lost in the tackle: On far too many occasions ball was turned over by Galway players. They allowed Mayo players to stop them and just physically rip the ball out of their hands. Mayo have obviously worked on their tackling, but from a Galway perspective it was most disappointing to see the likes of Finian Hanley, Paul Conroy, and others losing the ball in contact. Likewise we were blocked down on numerous occasions and that gives a great lift to the opposition. We must not allow that to happen this weekend.

Mayo have the motivation to sneak past Galway on Sunday

Thu, Jul 16, 2009

My uncle worked in the pub business all his life. It’s all he really knew. I remember clearly one day as a young lad when he asked me what a pub needed to survive. I was young and innocent so I spoke of good food, passing trade, live music, a good pint of Guinness, a growing demographic in the area and some sponsorship of local teams and events. Yada, yada, ya.
