Ladies under 16s capture Connacht title

The Galway under 16 ladies football team regained the Connacht title by beating Mayo on a scoreline of 5-15 to 1-13 at Hyde Park in Roscommon on Wednesday. The half time score was 3-08 to 1-09 and it was anyone's game but Galway stepped up a gear in the second half and came away comfortable winners. They now take on the Leinister champions, Dublin, in the semi -final on the weekend of August 13/14.

Amid speculation that Connacht Rugby has changed its title sponsor in preparation for its opening Heineken Cup campaign, the province has refused to confirm any new deal. Speaking to the Galway Advertiser yesterday, media officer Luke Murphy insisted the club is still exploring a number of avenues: “Negotiations are still ongoing with a number of parties. We are not in a position to confirm a change to our sponsor as of yet. It is possible an announcement might be made next week but as it stands we cannot confirm any details as we still have a number of interested parties. Obviously the Heineken Cup has been a great accelerator for us. We have been able to redevelop the Sportsground here, putting on a roof and it is a significant capital project.”

Eight gold medals were won by Galway Rowing Club at the recent Irish National Rowing Championships in Cork at the weekend.

The first win was achieved by the men’s J16 eight, who went into the championship with high hopes after a successful season. It proved a thrilling event with two Galway clubs fighting it out to the finish. By the 1000 metre mark St Joseph’s College, Galway (the Bish) was the only crew challenging Galway and only one-quarter of a length separated the two. However Galway opened up a one-length lead by the 1500 mark which they extended to the finish line to give the crew of cox Ross Madden, stroke Nathan Collins, Alan Murtagh, David Laffey, Martin Laffey, Michael Flaherty, Chris Laffey, Gary Cooney and Conor Curran, the first gold for the Galway club.

Paul Townend landed a fairytale first success since returning from injury when driving Blazing Tempo home in thetote.com Galway Plate. Townend brought the well-backed mare with a telling run from the last to collar Wise Old Owl in the last 100 yards and end trainer Willie Mullins' wait to win this valuable handicap chase. It was also a first win in the race for the Irish champion jockey, who only returned on Monday after fracturing his collarbone at Punchestown in May. The early pace was cut out by Back Of The Pack, last year's winner Finger Onthe Pulse, Archie Boy and Schindler's Gold. Head Of The Posse was an early casualty while Majestic Concorde was pulled up after a bad mistake at the fence in front of the stands as they set out for the final circuit. The well-fancied Bahrain Storm fell as the race began to unfold and there were plenty in with chances at the final fence, where Lucky Wish came down for the second year running. Wise Old Owl was left with a handy lead but Townend saw that the gamble on Blazing Tempo was won as he carried the 5-1 favourite home by a length and a quarter from the 13-2 shot. Aigle D'Or, trained by Nicky Henderson, was third with Hampshire Express fourth.
