Maree grab big win over Tolka Rovers

Maree opened their National League campaign on Saturday night in Oranmore with a comprehensive 30-point win over Tolka Rovers of Dublin.

Maree looked sharp from the tip-off, clearly benefiting from pre-season friendlies against Moycullen, UCD Marian and Ulster Elks. Their high-octane man-to-man defence was the key, forcing Tolka turnovers, converted by the home team into some slick fastbreak basketball. In the third quarter Maree outscored Tolka by 25 – 7 on their way to a 65 – 35 final score.

Corofin edge past St James in minor A final

It is a tough assignment facing a side that competed in division 1A last season, but Galwegians will be buoyed having pipped UL Bohemians by 14 - 13 in last weekend’s opener in Limerick.

Train service for soccer international

Iarnród Éireann is running a special train for tomorrow’s Ireland v Russia soccer international at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.The rain returns to Galway after the match, departing Dublin Heuston Station at 11.05pm, serving Tullamore, Athlone, Ballinasloe and Athenry stations. Iarnród Éireann advises supporters that they will not be able to board trains unless they are in possession of train ticket.

Open day at Galway Lawn Tennis Club

The Galway Lawn Tennis Club is hosting an open day on Saturday for anyone who wishes to view its facilities between 12 noon and 5pm. Coaches and players will be on hand for visitors to try the tennis, squash and badminton facilities, in addition to the range of indoor activities offered at the Threadneedle Road club. Indoor facilities include a sauna/steam room, pool and tennis tables, and sports shop, while the club also hosts a variety of outings, including hill walking, golf, and theatre and cinema trips. A special membership rate is available on the day.

We were not at all surprised last Saturday evening when it took extra-time to separate these two near neighbours in a keenly-fought and exciting county semi-final.

There is rarely much between the sides and it was just the extra bit of jizz, class and fire-power that Nicky and Padraic Joyce bring to the Killererin outfit that saw the 2007 county champions ease into the 2010 decider where they will face Corofin. The final is fixed for October 17 in Pearse Stadium.
