• The Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing Club had three fighters out on Sunday at the Dragon Wars promotion in Kilkenny and all three were victorious. Martin Murray totally outclassed his opponent Connor Myers from Shannon, while mum of two Yvonne McNevin easily outscored her Kilkenny opponent Mags Walsh over the three rounds in her first outing. IKF All Ireland welterweight champ Alex Novac took the laurels in an international bout against Andrew Davis from Wales.Novac, who holds the title at 67kg, weighed in at 69.5 for the fight on Sunday while the Welshman tipped the scales at 71.9kg. Novac will now drop back to welterweight to make a mandatory first defence of his title against No 1 contender John O' Shea on October 17 and this fight will again be in Kilkenny.

Portumna Golf Club: It was a story of the three Marys from Portumna as the minor ladies won the All-Ireland at Donabate Golf Club. Portumna were unstoppable in the final with Mary McDonagh leading the way by scoring a 4&3 win in the first match. Mary McElroy followed with an impressive 7&5 win before Mary Kelly brought the title west thanks to a 5&4 win in the penultimate game.

Portumna win first All Ireland Junior Cup

Portumna Golf Club has won the All-Ireland Junior Cup for the first time in the club’s history. Having They won Connacht in August at Castlebar GC, they returned to the same venue for the All-Ireland finals where they overcame Ulster champions Banbridge to advance to the final against Naas. Father and son John and Sean Cleary were the heroes on the first day, both coming from a deficit position to win their respective matches. And Pat Quinlan was the toast of the club the following day after the Clearys won their respective matches. Quinlan made sure of the trophy when he hit a tremendous four iron to 10ft at the difficult par three 16th to see off David Prendergast of Naas in the fifth and final match. The team was captained by Matt Donoghue.

Kickboxing success for Galway club

Gort’s two well-known kickboxing exponents were successful at the recent IKF kickboxing show on Saturday night in the Gort Community Centre.

Eric Daly, All Ireland kickboxing champion, moved up to welterweight to take on Irish No 1 Chris Coyle from Donegal, and he came out on the right side of the decision, winning 40-36, 40-38, 40-37. The decision also went in favour of Cathal Manning who claimed the victory over Dubliner Andy Myres in a Full K-1 Rules contest by 30-26, 30-26, 30-26.
