While Connacht await Robbie Henshaw's contract decision for next season, which had been expected before Christmas, Lam is continuing to add to his squad - the latest being the promotion of centre Peter Robb and Galwegian flanker Sean O'Brien this week from the Academy.

"We now have five boys out of the Academy, year three, signed up - boys who have been with us right through pre-season. Robb has made massive progress and we are really pleased where he is at, and O'Brien has shown in his performances, like everyone knows, he has a big future - again a good local boy.

Casserly looking for top 20 finish

This weekend sees the opening cross country race of the season, the relaunched National Short Course Championships, which will feature several Galwegian athletes.

Some of the county's top cross country runners taking part include Kathryn Casserly of Castlegar, who will hope for a top 20 finish, along with a strong GCH ladies squad that includes Connacht champion Niamh Hennelly, Esther O'Flaherty, Maeve Brassil and Jean O'Connor. Cian Corcoran and Seamus Leddy will represent the GCH men over the 4km distance.

Moycullen edged out in final quarter by league leaders

SSE Airtricity Moycullen ran league-leaders C & S UCC Demons close in their New Year's fixture at NUIG Kingfisher, but lost in the final quarter by 77-68.

Moycullen, still missing players through injury, opened the game firing, with Kyle Cunningham, Sean Candon and Dylan Cunningham finding their range from the three-point line, while Paul Freeman and Joseph Tummon converted inside, helping them into an eight-point lead. However Demons found their touch through American Lehmon Colbert who connected on a number of occasions to close the gap to 23-20 at the break.

Goal Miles take place at three venues across County Galway this year - South Park Grattan Road on Christmas Day at midday, St Jarleth's College on Christmas Day at 11am to 12.30pm, and the Dangan Running Track, NUIG Campus on Christmas Day at 10am to 1pm.

Christmas open weekend at Connemara links

Connemara Golf Links is hosting an open weekend from Saturday (December 26) to Monday (December 28).

The club will hold a qualifying 18 hole single competition on each day for €25, giving golfers who have been unable to play their home courses due to the weather an opportunity to get some rounds in over the festive season. On offer as prizes are hampers, while the clubhouse bar will be open with food available each day.

Salthill Knocknacarra GAA club has launched its annual John Joyce Memorial Sevens Gaelic football tournament to be held at the Prairie, Árus Bóthar na Trá, on St Stephen's Day.This is the 17th consecutive running of the tournament held each year in honour of the former Salthill Knocknacarra and Galway football star, who passed away on December 14, aged 29.
