A player who scorers 2-14 deserves to be on the winning side, and that was the case for Mayo’s Cora Staunton on Sunday when her team ended a four-match losing streak to Galway in the Connacht Senior Ladies Football Championship final at MacHale Park.
Mayo captain Sarah Tierney lifted the CBE Cup for the 10th time in Mayo’s history after the final whistle, and there could be little arguing the merits of Mayo’s 13-point victory, winning by 3-20 to 0-16.

The Galway senior hurlers must be sick to their back teeth of the sight of the black and amber jersey after Richie Hogan, Conor Fogarty, and company tore into the second half of the Leinster final last weekend to see off Galway with a fair degree of comfort, 1-26 to 0-22.
Galway had dominated parts of the first half, held the Kilkenny forwards fairly well, and led at half time by three points, 0-13 to 0-10.

There was a genuinely eerie feeling at McHale Park last Saturday evening around 8.30pm. Galway had just beaten the home side by 1-12 to 0-12 and large numbers of Mayo supporters just sat in the stand numbed and perplexed by what had happened.

Some say that football is a language spoken universally, and while that may be true, perspective and region can have a massive influence on your view(s) of the game. I live over in America, however, my parents grew up here and are completely Irish like everyone else in my family line. I have spent an extreme amount of time in Ireland; becoming adapted to the culture and social normalities, and in my head, those principles have significantly helped shape me into the man I am today. Because of those reasons, despite what my accent might imply, I do consider myself Irish. Before coming back for the summer, I briefly experienced the European Championship (Euros) and the affect it had on American society; as a result, I can now compare America's participation against the Irish's stupendous level.

Mayo’s reign in Connacht was always going to come to an end at some stage, on a drizzly and grey night in Castlebar the maroon and white invaders from south of border, stared them down and stood tall at the end of the battle. When the final whistle went, the Galway faithful celebrated their 39th championship win over their old rivals with as much gusto and glee as if they had just claimed the All Ireland title.
