Coach Pat Lam is promising Connacht will improve "massively" this weekend, knowing that unless they find the sparkling form which set the Guinness Pro 12 alive last season, it could derail their seasonal ambitions.

Bidwell on track

Galway's Matt Bidwell continued his winning ways on the track, taking the Lust for Life 5k at Ballybrit Racecourse on Saturday.

Organised by Athletics Ireland and Vhi, the event attracted more than 300 runners for the two-lap race around the famous track. Bidwell took an easy win, clocking 16.48, to finish well clear of Fergal Walsh of Athenry AC who ran 17.23, and Brian O Connor of GCH who took third in 17.32.

Injury time strike leaves United disappointed as they head north

An SSE Airtricity League premier division campaign that promised so much early on in the season is edging towards a worrying conclusion for Galway United, who make the long trek to the Brandywell on Friday for a clash against Derry City (7.45pm).

Last Saturday evening United suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Sligo Rovers, who finished strongly netting the winner in injury time courtesy of Achille Campion. Tommy Dunne’s team hit the front in the second half when Gary Shanahan scored, but Rovers’ Raffaele Cretaro equalised before Campion landed the late knockout blow.

Galway WFC players were part of a successful outing for the Republic of Ireland senior women’s side against Wales in Caerphilly, South Wales, which finished with an all-Galway WFC back four. Vaptain Méabh De Búrca, along with debutantes Shauna Fox, Chloe Moloney and Sadhbh Doyle, helped Ireland to a 2-1 victory with the aid of two late goals from Arsenal’s Katie McCabe.

Impressive minor footballers glide into All-Ireland final

The Galway minor footballers, under the guidance of team manager Stephen Joyce and selectors Jason Taniane and Terence Morgan, produced a good performance Sunday in Croke Park on Sunday, defeating Donegal by 2-12 to 1-11 to qualify for the All-Ireland minor final for the first time in nine years.
