It was the first of many that eventually would follow. Castlegar senior hurlers set the standard, winning Galway's first All Ireland senior club hurling crown in 1980, a competition previously dominated by Cork clubs since 1970. It took 11 years before another Galway club, Kiltormer, would succeed, while Sarsfields, Athenry, Portumna Clarinbridge, and St Thomas have all having delighted hurling fans throughout the county, demonstrating the strength of the game in the west of Ireland.

At what age did you start playing? Probably around four on the family farm at home and around seven with my national school in Gortanumera. Once you went into national school and started to play ‘real’ hurling games, you had to learn and understand team positions etc. Before that it was just running around like a crazy young lad chasing a sliotar.

Do you remember your first game? Not my first game particularly, but I do remember winning a National Schools county final with Gortanumera when I was about eight years old. It was only seven a-side teams, but at that age it was a pretty big deal.

Connacht Rugby added the 41st member to its 2020/21 squad with Munster's Alex Wootton joining on loan for the season. The versatile backline player can expected to play an important part in Connacht's backline, particularly with the loss of several key players at the end of the last season. The 26-years-old, a former Irish U20 squad member, made a name for himself in Munster as a lethal finisher, and that is what Connacht coach Andy Friend will want as they prepare for the restart on Augut 22. Friend says Wootton’s arrival will strengthen Connacht’s back field options. "Alex is a very exciting back three player who has all the talent to take his game to the next level. His versatility across the back line will also help us as we look to compete on both fronts next season."

Galway gives Royals a second-half roasting

Thu, Jul 09, 2020

However, John O'Mahony's Tribesmen prevailed to claim their 13th crown. Interestingly neither county has contested an All Ireland football final since with Kerry and Dublin dominating.

Sporting memories : Wallabies win, but Connacht steal the show with 15-man move

Thu, Jul 02, 2020

On a week when Connacht Rugby and Galway GAA lost one of its former players, the well-respected gentleman Jimmy Glynn, our memory is of the visit to Galway of the Australian Rugby team in 1996. Few sports people have the opportunity to test themselves against the best in the world, but Jimmy Glynn did against the All Blacks in 1974. Some 22 years later when the Wallabies came to visit, Jimmy remained an avid follower of the game through his involvement with Corinthians RFC.
