Galway Women inflict double woes on Bohs

On Saturday afternoon Galway Women’s FC defeated Bohemians home and away in the U17 and senior FAI Women’s National League.

The seniors travelled to the Oscar Traynor Centre and must have thought they were in for an easy afternoon when after 17 minutes a challenge by Bohemians' goalkeeper Courtney Maguire on Aoife Thompson saw Bohs reduced to 10. However, it was not until 52 minutes when Galway made the advantage count when Thompson opened the scoring, and that only lasted two minutes when Bronagh Kane equalised for the Dubliners.

Former Connacht Rugby player Tom McCartney joined the club in 2014 and quickly established himself as a key playing member and a leader during his time at the Sportsground. A PRO12 medal winner, he was selected on the 2016 Dream Team, and played more than a 100 games for Connacht. When McCartney’s season before retirement was cut short due to Covid-19, he returned with his family to New Zealand, missing an assured fond farewell from all the Connacht fans. Edris continues top form

Local athlete Abas Edris of Castlegar continued his top form, winning both the 800m and the mile on the third day of the Castlegar AC organised grass track and field competition at Doughiska on Friday.

The event, which continues to attracted good numbers, also produced wins for Holly O'Boyle of Craughwell on the women's mile, while Siobhan Geaney of South Galway took the honours in the 800m, and Aisling Finn, also of South Galway AC, won over 60m.

Corofin juggernaut continues to roll

Reigning champions Corofin followed up their demolition of Oughterard in the opening round with another resounding victory over an under-strength Monivea-Abbey at the weekend.

In one of two fixtures in the Galway Senior Football Championship last weekend,Monivea-Abbey headed into this group 4A game as massive underdogs in their attempt to overcome the Corofin juggernaut, and were not helped by missing two key players, Cillian McDaid (hamstring) and Patrick Mullins (soccer commitments).

High stakes for hurling clubs

There was acute disappointment for hurling fans around the county when news filtered through on Tuesday evening that current outdoor gathering restrictions would be maintained for another three weeks at least, meaning the senior championship will have reached the knock-out stages before larger crowd numbers can even be contemplated.

Reports had suggested an easing of the restrictions to allow maximum attendances of up to 500 at sporting events, but this now will not be the case as the Government acts with extreme caution in the wake of rising Covid-19 cases around the country.
