McDonnell calls on private operators to run bus service in east side of city

As the bus strike drags into its second week, a Galway city councillor is calling on private bus operators to look into providing transport services for the east side of the city.

Independent city councillor, and former Mayor, Declan McDonnell is in the process of contacting private companies to see if services can be provided for the Ballybane, Mervue, Renmore, Castlepark, and Doughiska areas. This follows representations from elderly constituents asking for this “opportunity be investigated”.

A public meeting on the rising cost of car insurance, organised by People Before Profit Galway, will be held at 8pm this evening in the Western Hotel on Prospect Hill.

Ireland has high car insurance premiums. Insurance companies claim the price hikes are caused by the rising costs of claims following car accidents. However, Garda figures show there has been a drop in accidents, with the costs of collisions having dropped by 44 per cent between 2007 and 2012.
