Calling all aspiring actors! Ros na Rún, TG4’s flagship Irish language soap opera is casting for a male actor in his 20s for their next season which will begin filming in August. Budding actors interested in sinking their teeth into challenging, exciting, and dramatic storylines are encouraged to apply for an audition by emailing a CV and recent headshot to [email protected]. Fluent Irish is essential for this role. The deadline for applications is Wednesday May 10.

The event took place as part of a day of tribute to the French author jointly organised by NUI Galway, Cúirt International Festival of Literature and the French Embassy, in the presence of French Ambassador to Ireland, M. Jean-Pierre Thébault, and of one of Michel Déon’s fellow members of the Académie Française, M. Frédéric Vitoux.

Only a small amount of blanket bog exists in the world and Ireland possesses eight per cent of the world’s blanket bog and is the most important country in Europe for this type of habitat. As a result, Conamara Bog Week will celebrate its 33rd year this May, with a nine-day festival packed with walks, talks, music and poetry, all in honour of the rugged landscape that surround Letterfrack.

Festival goers are invited to engage in invigorating Connemara Bog Walks which will take place daily from Monday to Friday. Morning walks will be led by local ecologist Marie Louise Heffernan and the afternoon walks will be led by a member of the staff of Connemara National Park. Internationally acclaimed ecologist Gordan D’arcy will also give a fascinating talk entitled ‘Connemara explored’ in the Connemara National Park which will also play host to a poetry reading by Theo Dorgan, Moya Canon and Michael Gorman as well as the launch of the Letterfrack Poetry Trail book (Sunday June 4th ).

Gardai in Tuam are investigating a break-in at a house in the town last weekend in which a number of tools were stolen.

Last Friday night (April 21), the raiders entered a shed at a house on the Upper Dublin Road in the town. They made away with a selection of tools including a Parkside pink and black hammer drill, a small Parkside gun drill, a 4.5” Parkside green and black angle grinder, and a 9” Makita angle grinder.

The sister of a 30-year-old Latvian man who was strangled to death by a fellow Latvian has said she misses her brother every day and she still cannot believe that he is dead. The testimony was heard as part of a victim impact statement read yesterday (Wednesday) to the Central Criminal Court in Dublin, where a 31-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison for murdering the woman’s brother.

You see a punishment that isn’t really a punishment isn’t a punishment at all. Giving up avocadoes for Lent isn’t any bother if you never cared if you saw an avocado ever again.
