Homelessness in west growing faster than any other region

Homelessness in the West of Ireland is growing at a faster rate than any other region according to local charity, Galway Simon Community. The latest homeless figures released show 496 people, including 209 children, were in emergency accommodation in the West of Ireland during July, a 56% increase compared to the previous year.

Galway Greens call for Trump protests

The Green Party is calling for massive protests against the planned visit of controversial US President Donald Trump, which is due to go ahead in November, saying his “policies do not reflect the Irish people’s values”.

Trump will be in Europe on November 11, to participate in the armistice commemorations in Paris, marking the centenary of the end of WWI. Ireland is among the countries he intends to visit during that time. A statement from the White House said he plans to “renew the deep and historic ties between our two nations.” He is expected to spend two days in the State, with one in Dublin, and another at Doonbeg, County Clare, where his golf course is located.

Gardai investigate spate of burglaries in city and county

Gardai are appealing for information following a series of burglaries in the city and county over the past week.

A shed at the side of a private home at Moyvilla, Oranmore, was broken into between 2pm on Thursday August 30 and 3pm on Saturday September 1. A Castelgarden ride-on lawnmower and a petrol hedge trimmer were taken from the shed.

Tuam and adoption scandals may involve enforced disappearances

On UN International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) has called on the State to ensure that family members of children who were forcibly disappeared, either through forced adoption or unidentified burials while in institutional care, are given information about the children’s fate and whereabouts.

Enforced disappearance is widely considered one of the gravest possible human rights violations, and is recognised in international law as a crime against humanity when widespread or systematic.

Boil notices stay in place for two county water schemes

Irish Water, working in partnership with Galway County Council, have reminded customers supplied by the Kilconnell Public Water Supply and the Ballyboggan Group Water Scheme, that the Boil Water Notice issued on the scheme on June 18 due to elevated levels of turbidity in the raw water remains in place.

Irish Water has instructed a hydrogeologist to carry out trials at an alternative borehole supply to determine if it is suitable to supply the scheme. If this is successful then this would be used as a temporary solution. A longer term, permanent ground water solution is also being investigated by the hydrogeologist. The boil water notice will remain in place while the short term solution is being trialed. Irish Water will continue to liaise with the HSE on the matter.
