Sixty-seven nursing positions vacant in UHG and Merlin Park

The fact that there are almost 67 fulltime permanent and temporary nursing/midwifery vacancies at Galway University Hospitals (UHG and Merlin Park) was “alarming”, a city councillor said this week.

Cllr Padraic Conneely told a meeting of the HSE West’s regional health forum that he was concerned by this figure and wondered what was the “blockage” when Galway was such a good place in which to live and work.

Tony Canavan, the HSE West’s chief officer for Community Healthcare West, said while all HSE areas nationally were affected, Gort, Kinvara, Ardrahan, Portumna, West Connemara, and East Galway, were especially hit.

Get into the drop zone — Donaghpatrick NS launches major fundraiser

Donaghpatrick National School launched the new nationwide show 20k Drop as their major fundraiser for this year in Queally’s Bar Caherlistrane last week. The 20k drop is run nationwide by Pallas Marketing and is similar to the TV show “The Million Pound Drop”. Each of the eight contestants selected will receive €2500 and must place their money on each of eight correct answers. Having answered the eight questions, the contestants keep the remaining amount.

Principal of Donaghpatrick N.S Ms Muireann Cradock said they are delighted with the response from the local companies who have come on board as major sponsors and advertisers.

Sweeter than Roses concert tomorrow night

Oranmore soprano, Helen Hancock will present an evening of singing and music in the auditorium of Galway Community College, Moneenageisha tomorrow Friday March 22 at 8pm.

All proceeds from the concert will go to Voices for Galway, a branch of Down Syndrome Galway which fundraises to provide additional speech therapy for children with special needs, where early intervention is so important.
