Learn a language over six weekends

The Granary Learning Centre is offering a convenient way to complete a beginner course in Spanish, German, or Italian over six weekend days in May and June. By the end of the course the student will achieve A1 level in language competence according to the European ranking scheme. Class times are scheduled to allow attendees to travel to Galway in the morning and be home again by the evening. Each course is taught by two qualified teachers who are both native speakers with many years of experience.

Council agrees to twinning of Clifden with Coyoacan in Mexico

Plans are currently being drawn up to begin the process of twinning Clifden with Coyoacan in Mexico City following an agreement which was reached at a recent Galway County Council meeting.

County councillor Eileen Mannion has confirmed Galway Council Council had been contacted by the Mayor of Coyoacan recently requesting a twinning with Clifden. Following on from this Cllr Mannion and the Mayor of Galway County, Cllr Michael Maher, met with the Mexican ambassador, Carlos Garcia de Alba, to discuss the possibility of twinning. The Mexican ambassador is now expected to visit Clifden in June with the twinning ceremony due to take place during the ‘San Patricio Mexican-Irish Festival’ which takes place between September 7 and 12.

Man charged with thirty eight counts of deceiving city bookie

A man has been charged with up to 38 counts of deceiving a city centre bookmakers by falsifying bets on horses over the course of three months and is to face trial at Galway Circuit Criminal Court.

Tom Mulvihill (32) with an address at 24 Silver Springs, Cork, and formerly of Riverdale, Oranmore, appeared before Galway District Court on Monday charged with 19 counts of dishonestly by deception, with the intention of making gain or causing loss to another, by destroying, defacing, or falsifying a document made or required for accounting purposes, did while providing information for the purpose of recording bets placed on horse races produced or made use of the EPOS money transfer system by making an entry on a lodgement sheet that was false, misleading or deceptive at William Hill, Ballybane, on various dates between January 17 and April 18, 2010, contrary to Section 10(1)(a) and (3) of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud) Act 2001.
