Thu, Jul 26, 2012
Achtaíodh Bille na Gaeltachta Déardaoin seo caite i ndiaidh don fhreasúra siúl amach as an Dáil, i bhfianaise nach raibh sé i gceist ag an Aire Gaeltachta Dinny McGinley, glacadh le haon cheann de bhreis agus 150 leasú a bhí molta acu ar an mbille. Seo an chéad uair le fada an lá nach raibh aontacht sa Dáil ar cheist na Gaeilge, ach theip ar Fhine Gael agus páirtí an Lucht Oibre an aontacht sin a bhaint amach toisc gur dhiúltaigh siad glacadh le hoiread is leasú amháin don Bhille.
Mar thoradh ar seo tá bille achtaithe atá thar a bheith lochtach agus bille nach gcabhróidh le buanú na Gaeilge sa Ghaeltacht. Drochlá don Ghaeltacht agus don Ghaeilge ab ea Déardaoin an 19 Iúil.

In Act One of Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor, a play, so legend has it, Queen Elizabeth personally commissioned because she so enjoyed the character of Sir John Falstaff in Henry IV, 1& 2, we meet Master Abraham Slender who has come to court the young and lovely Mistress Anne Page. As he hesitates at the door, he laments, “I had rather than 40 shillings I had my book of Songs and Sonnets here.” The joke here, for Shakespeare’s audience, concerns the name of the book Slender mentions – Songs and Sonnets.

Thu, Jul 26, 2012
The Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes group has blasted the Government and local authorities in Galway for what it describes as attempt to “guilt” people into paying the controversial household charge.
The comment by the national campaign group comes in the wake of news earlier this week that the Department of the Environment has notified both the Galway City Council and the Galway County Council that funding cuts of more than €3 million could be implemented if the €100 household charge is not paid by those who continue to refuse to pay it. The group has also strongly hit out at suggestions made by a city councillor, and reported in the local media, that those who refuse to pay the household charge are effectively holding the city to ransom with threats that services will be severely affected as a result of non-payment.
