GMIT to hold open morning this weekend

A go-kart demonstration, featuring electric cars built from scratch by third year mechanical and energy engineering students in GMIT, will be among the highlights at the institute’s open morning, taking place this Saturday from 10am to 12.30pm.

The go-kart demo will take place in the visitor car park to the right of the IT Learning Resource Centre at the Dublin Road campus. The demo is one of a host of exciting interactive events and activities taking place in the two city-based campuses; the GMIT Centre for Creative Arts & Media (CCAM) and the Dublin Road campus.

Fascinating images from above by FlyCapture Drone offer opportunities for emergency services

A new venture, based in Oranmore that uses a drone to take the most amazing images from the sky, is also using the technology to help out with local missing person searches. FlyCapture has volunteered its services to provide assistance to the newly established Oranmore Maree Coastal Search Unit (OMCSU) which has been co-ordinating and running searches for missing people in recent weeks.

Scoil Mhuire NS. Oranmore celebrated the launch of their ‘Healthy Eating’ policy on Monday with a series of events to mark the occasion.

Local supermarket manager, Gavin Walsh of Nestor’s Supervalu arrived with a delivery of fruit, providing fresh fruit treats for all pupils to enjoy on the day. Glenisk and Clada Water also lent their support by providing yoghurts and water for the children to enjoy.

Quarter of all homes in Galway fall into the poorest energy ratings

Some 25 per cent of Galway homes fall into the poorest energy ratings - the E, F and G categories - resulting in draughty, cold houses with increased electricity and gas costs. By contrast only nine per cent reach the A and B ratings.

When Joe Healy started to poll strongly in Munster, which should have been the stronghold of Kerry native Flor McCarthy, the signs were ominous for the Kenmore man, and the IFA presidential race's third competitor, Laois native Henry Burns. The Athenry man was surging ahead before any box in Galway was opened, which was always going to have a significantly positive bearing on his final tally.

The plan was presented to the Galway City Council this week. The plan outlines how the Galway City and County Library Service plans to grow over the next five years, with a cultural community central library for the city at the hub of the new developments.

Public meeting to discuss South Galway’s flooding issues

A public meeting about the ongoing flooding problem in South Galway will take place in Sullivan’s Hotel Gort next Monday April 18. This winter again saw mass flooding in the area and numerous people having to be evacuated from their homes. There is still land under water and farmers are suffering the after-effects of trying to deal with ruined sodden land.
