New Government urged to support proposal for national ME clinic in Galway

A Galway man, who was diagnosed with ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome when he was in his twenties, is campaigning for an ME clinic to be set up in Ireland.
David, who lives in Woodquay, but wishes to keep his surname anonymous, is spearheading the drive which would see a state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facility set up in Galway or in one of the other major centres in the country.

A nephew of one of Galway’s most famous hurling heroes has lamented the state of the Blackrock diving tower in Salthill. Séan Duggan was one of the most high profile users of the facility, swimming there for more than 50 years. Indeed in hail, rain, or snow the GAA legend still undertook his daily swim, up to six months before he passed away at the age of 91. His nephew Peter L Duggan says it is a travesty that the famous landmark has deteriorated to such a state.

Last week the Galway Advertiser featured an article after a local woman contacted the paper with a story about a frightening incident which occurred the previous Monday. The woman was driving home alone at 11pm on the main road between Moycullen and Spiddal (known as The Mountain Road) when she noticed a car to her rear being driven erratically. She detailed how a car came flying up behind her and began tailgating her and flashing lights.
The woman became scared when she indicated to turn right down a rural road towards her home. The car behind her, which was silver with a Dublin registration plate, immediately followed, all the while still flashing her. She turned into her home and the car sped off.

The landmark Bank of Ireland building at 43 Eyre Square has been sold for in excess of €10.5 million.
The Irish Times reported this week that the building was sold to a private investor. It is understood the building guided at €10.5 million and sold for more than this.

Fine Gael TD for Galway West and Mayo South, Seán Kyne has welcomed the significant increase in resource teaching hours in Galway schools for the coming school year.
From September, Galway schools will benefit from 11,322 resource teaching hours provided by over 486 resource teaching posts. Galway’s primary schools have been allocated 313 resource teaching posts while Galway’s secondary schools have been allocated 173 posts for the coming school year.

Gender ARC and the Centre for Global Women’s Studies at NUI Galway will host a book launch and public lecture on Thursday, 5 May. NUI Galway’s Dr Caitriona Clear will launch her upcoming book Women’s Voices in Ireland: women’s magazines in the 1950s and 60s.
Irish poet and playwright Mary Coll will introduce Dr Clear’s lecture, ‘What we preserve from the past and what we ignore: some new perspectives on women in Ireland in the 1950s and 60s’. The lecture will focus on Dr Clear’s work which involves reflecting and making realisations about the state of Irish women’s history.
