Children with diabetes forced to travel to Limerick for treatment

Local children with Type 1 diabetes areas are forced to travel to Limerick for treatment because a paediatric diabetes consultant post has remained unfilled at University Hospital Galway for the past two years.

The children are under 12 and are from Galway, Roscommon and the surrounding areas.

The 12th annual Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim in aid of Cancer Care West which took place on Saturday last 22nd July saw a total of 125 swimmers safely cross Galway Bay.

Officially one of Ireland's biggest and longest one-day swims, this year over 100 swimmers will swim 13km across the bay to raise funds for Cancer Care West. Starting from Aughinish in Co. Clare and finishing at Blackrock Diving Tower in Salthill.

More people than ever before are sleeping rough in Galway city

The "extraordinary" deterioration in the homelessness crisis has led to this "unprecedented" situation, according to Martin O'Connor, the assistant CEO of COPE Galway which provides emergency accommodation and day services for the homeless.
