Galway students say no to income-contingent loan scheme

Galway's students have spoken out unanimously against any potential plans to introduce an income-contingent loan scheme for higher education funding.

Both GMIT Students' Union and NUI Galway Students' Union called on the support of senators for a Labour private members motion, which rejects any moves to implement the loan scheme and calls for a publicly funded third level education system in Ireland.

Ó Cuív wants national plan for 'worsening' mobile and broadband services

Broadband services and mobile phone connection in rural Ireland are not improving, but are getting worse, and it is time the Government intervened directly on this, rather than "leaving it totally at the whim of the private sector".

This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway West TD and spokesperson on Rural Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív. He was speaking following complaints from constituents in Galway West that the service, particularly on certain networks, has "deteriorated in recent months", despite the establishment of a Government taskforce to deal with the issue.

Mass of Thanksgiving for Abbey restoration works

A Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated at the Abbey Church in St Francis Street on Sunday at 11am following the completion of the re-wiring, re-painting and restoration works carried out at the church during the past 18 months.

"These works were the result of a very successful fundraising drive and the very generous response by both the public and parishioners to our appeal. All are invited to join our community in the celebration of thanksgiving," says a spokesperson for the Church.

Traditional scythe mowing in Terryland Forest Park this Saturday

This Saturday at 10.30am, July 22, as part of the Galway Fringe Festival, members of Cumann na bhFear (Men's Shed Galway city) and Conservation Volunteers will use traditional hand-held instruments to mow the grasslands at Terryland.

The mowing will be the second year that volunteers have been called upon to help mow the wildflower meadow.
