Galway four in rowing squads

Four young Galway rowers have been selected to represent Ireland at the upcoming Coupe de la Jeunesse, which will be hosted by Ireland this year.

Caoileann Nic Dhonncha and Elise Carney of Colaiste Iognaid, and Michael Daly and Matthew Gallagher of St Joseph’s RC, join 28 rowers from Dublin, Wicklow, Limerick, Cork, Kerry, Wexford, Fermanagh and Derry at the annual international rowing regatta for rowers 18 years or under.

More than 230 people in the Kinvara area signed a petition of support for Senator Frances Black’s Occupied Territories Bill, which seeks to end Irish trade in goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories.

Senator Frances Black, along with Palestinian Ambassador, Ahmad Abdelrazek, was in Kinvara recently to discuss how citizens and communities can contribute to securing justice and peace for Palestine. While there, Sen Black was presented with the petition of support.

Homeless shelters at breaking point as crisis worsens

Homelessness in Galway is at crisis stage with the emergency shelters run by Galway Simon and COPE at breaking point, the head of Galway Simon said this week.

Urging the Government to "wake up" to the reality of the situation, Karen Golden, its CEO, said there were 9,846 people nationally and 514 in the west living in emergency accommodation. She described this as a "tragedy".
