Weekend closure of beach toilets ‘mind boggling’ says O’Flaherty

A city councillor has slammed as “mind boggling” and “ridiculous”, the closure of toilets on a city beach at weekends — the time when they are most in demand.

Independent city councillor Terry O’Flaherty said it made no sense for public toilets on Ballyloughane Beach to be open during weekdays and left “locked up” at the weekends. As a result, she put forward a motion at Monday’s Galway City Council meeting calling for the opening of the toilets both in Ballyloughane and Silver Strand. It received unanimous support from her fellow councillors.

Busking bye-laws ‘very damaging for our city’ — Cubbard

“A sad and very damaging day for our city” is how councillor Mike Cubbard has described the introduction of bye-laws that will curtail and reduce the ability of buskers to perform in Galway city centre.

At yesterday’s Galway City Council meeting, controversial bye-laws regulating busking in the city centre were passed. The new laws mean buskers will not be permitted to use amplification until after 6pm; performers aged under 16 will have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian; while ‘circle acts’ - buskers/street entertainers which draw large crowds - which some feel impede movement through the city streets - will not be allowed to perform on Shop Street until after 6pm.

Busking is not banned in Galway, says Mayor who feels quality of act will improve

Mayor of Galway Pearce Flannery has hit out at the amount of disinformation regarding the Council decision on busking and performance byelaws which were passed at Monday’s meeting of the City Council.

He says that it should be noted that at no stage whatsoever was it ever proposed to ban busking in Galway nor is there a ban on busking now.

New fisheries campaign aimed at trout anglers during Mayfly season

Inland Fisheries Ireland recently announced the launch of a new campaign, ‘Operation Ephemera’, which is designed to alert anglers to the intensification of efforts to detect those who either take undersize trout or more trout than the rules allow.

Compliance with other relevant angling regulations and rules, including relevant permit conditions which pertain on certain lakes, will also be enforced.

AtlanTec Festival returns for fourth year

Festival season in Galway is well underway with the AtlanTec Festival 2018, which runs through to 25 May. Now in its fourth year, the IT festival is organised by the IT Association Galway (ITAG). At the heart of the festival will be the international conference on 24 May, co-hosted by NUI Galway.

This year’s AtlanTec Conference at NUI Galway is themed on ‘The Art of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning’. Some 300 business leaders and expert software developers are expected to attend the day-long conference which will explore all aspects of the topic.
