Barna and Moycullen Veterinary is an all-female small animal practice. They have two branches – one in Barna and one in Moycullen. They have a large range of pets who come to see them for a wide range of reasons – hamsters to Great Danes, kittens to terrapins, elderly dogs to parrots and even rabbits to snakes!

They are used to dealing with shy and nervous pets that mightn’t have seen a vet in awhile and they have a lot of patients who drag their owner in the door – even when they were only going for a walk! They welcome people to bring their shy pet in for a cuddle and a treat without any poking or prodding and they are often delighted to come back then when they need to.

A mother paid a man €3,500 to falsely register himself as her baby’s father during a passport application in a bid to ensure that the child could remain in the country, the Galway Circuit Criminal Court heard this week.

Roulin Lin (26), a Chinese national, with an address given as 4 the Stables, College Road, Galway, and Graham Hopkins (34) with an address at 7 Castlepark, Ballybane, Galway, appeared before Judge Raymond Groarke on Tuesday for arraignment.

Jigsaw Galway is on the move to a new ‘Habitat’

Jigsaw Galway is in the process of moving premises from 18 Mary Street in Galway to the former Habitat building at Fairgreen House, Fairgreen Road, Galway. The move is set to be completed by tomorrow, February 25.

John Fitzmaurice, Manager of Jigsaw, said: “We apologise to all for any inconvenience caused during the move. We aim to be open again on Tuesday, March 1, with extended opening hours. The drop-in centre is closed this week, but we can still be contacted by phone if anyone needs to talk to us.”

Man who robbed bookies with scissor blade sentenced to three years

A three-year jail sentence was handed down at Galway Circuit Criminal Court this week to a man who terrified a city centre bookies’ clerk during a robbery in which he stole up to €800 in cash and brandished a scissor blade.

Vitamin D supplements to protect baby’s bone development

Parents of all babies, from birth to 12 months, are being advised to give their infants a daily vitamin D supplement to protect their growing bones. This advice comes to parents and guardians from the Health Service Executive, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, and the Department of Health and Children.

Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, but is present in very few foods. It is also known as the sunshine vitamin, because it is made in the body when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin. However, Ireland’s northerly latitude and lack of winter sunlight means that we cannot make enough vitamin D in this way.

It’ll be great to get this election out of the way. After months and months of political turmoil, the Irish psyche is quite distressed, Our heads have taken a pounding about five year plans and moving forward and looking backwards and for the greater good and in the national interest, and now we’re at the stage where we’re just wishing that they’d all shag off back under the rock whence they crawled.

We’ve had it up to here with it all and soon, thankfully, not soon enough, the whole thing will be over and the country will feel that a sort of change has taken place, anew beginning has been energised and with it, there will be some hope for us all and the generations to come.

Pawel Kowaczyk, a 33-year-old Polish national was last seen at his home at Frenchpark, Oranmore at 5am on Tuesday last February 15 2011.

A highly skilled workforce and research carried out by top-calibre Irish universities were key factors in the decicion by US multinational Fidelity Investments to expand its operations here with the view of creating some 75 new jobs at its Galway base.

Fidelity Investments, one of the world’s largest providers of financial services, first established its presence in Ireland in 1996 and currently has more than 240 technology associates working at office locations in Dublin and Galway. Earlier this week it was announced that the company will be adding 100 new positions to its Irish operations and it is expected that some 75 recruits will join the Galway operation at Parkmore East Business Park where 125 people are already employed. This move by Fidelity, which is supported by IDA Ireland, also represents an investment of €11 million over three years.
