Nest Friday may well be a defining date in the history of this nation. In the future history students will study the economic collapse of the early years of this millennium and our response to the challenge. Who we vote for next week will have a defining influence on the shape of our future. The question is, for whom do we vote? My analysis is based on national issues because we must cease with the parochial political gombeenery. Vote for the most competent team. Electing local stroke-pullers over competent legislators is the root cause of our problems.

Fine Gael councillor Brian Walsh has welcomed the party’s plans to double the funding for suicide prevention to €10m a year, if elected to form part of the next government, after new figures released by the HSE revealed that 29 people died by suicide in Galway in 2009.

Equipment worth €35,000 stolen in city mobile services store burglary

A mobile phone and computer repair store was completely “cleaned out” by four suspects during a night-time burglary in which they made off with equipment valued at €35,000.

A major investigation has now been launched by local gardai who are appealing for witness to come forward.

Seven month suspended sentence for selling cannabis

A man found in possession of nearly €800 worth of cannabis resin and who sold 10 grams a month to his friends received a seven month suspended sentence at Galway District Court this week.

Krzyaztos Betowski (29) with an address at 168 An Fiodan, Doughiska, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy charged with possession of cannabis herb with intent to sell or supply at his place of residence on March 19, 2010.
