Two million journeys on Galway/Dublin railway line

A total of 2.13 million journeys were recorded on the Dublin/Galway rail line in 2019, the highest figures ever recorded on the route. This represents a 4.1 per cent increase on 2018.

O’Connell bequest to SVP has helped thousands

A total of 95 projects in Galway City and County have received more than €9.6million from the bequest to the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) from the will of the late Maureen O’Connell former owner of O’Connell’s pub in Eyre Square.

Since the donation in 2007, the original bequest totalling €7.73 million grew to €10.5m through accumulated bank interest and other income.The bequest has now been fully drawn down or allocated and a detailed report on its use and the projects which have benefitted was published this week Entitled “A Living Legacy’ the report describes how funds from Miss O’Connell’s estate were disbursed.

Inis Meain water treatment plant back in production

The water treatment plant on Inis Meain is back in production following a power outage on the island due to storm conditions.

The plant has restarted, and treated water leaving the plant is fully compliant and safe for consumption according to Irish Water.

An East Galway TD has welcomed assurances from Transport Infrastructure Ireland on surface conditions on the M6, following concerns he expressed over recent collisions during hail showers.

Minister for the Diaspora and International Development Ciaran Cannon has said that the agency has advised that motorists should moderate their speed in hail showers and he is also calling on TII to install additional electronic signage at Junction 16 (Galway Plaza) on the M6 to ensure even greater safety for motorists.
