NUI Galway will hosts Ireland’s only Harry Potter Convention when PotterFest Galway takes place from January 31 to February 2 in the university’s Bailey Allen Hall.
Organised by NUIG’s Harry Potter Society, the event will offer a taste of Hogwarts in potions, astrology, or defence against the dark arts classes. In the opening ceremony on the Friday fans will be sorted into their houses and compete in games for the auror or deatheater teams. On Sunday there will be a chance to try out muggle Quidditch and to watch a couple of matches.

Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan, and senior representatives of the Office of Public Works (OPW) have been called on to visit Galway as a matter of urgency and to meet with city councillors and officials to discuss concerns over the extensive damage caused by the recent storms and flooding.
The motion was unanimously passed at last week’s Galway City Council meeting where one Labour councillor spoke of how he was “absolutely disgusted” that such a visit has not already taken place.

Students and teachers at Coláiste na Coiribe could be moving into a new school building by late 2015 after signifcant progress was made recently with the Galway Roscommon Education Training Board advertising for tenders for the construction project at Ballyburke in Knocknacarra.
The advertisement, placed on the Government eTenders procurement website last week, is seeking tenders for the construction of the new purpose built secondary school for Coláiste na Coiribe, which will accommodate 720 pupils and comprise three and two storey teaching blocks, a sports hall, five hard court surfaced ball courts, 68 parking spaces, and a grassed playing pitch.
