Report shows Galway’s biomethane could replace almost all natural gas consumed in county

Thu, Sep 14, 2023

Galway has the potential for a biomethane industry, which would produce enough renewable gas to replace 89% of the natural gas consumed by the 8,000 homes and businesses in Galway connected to the 400km gas network in the county and reduce carbon emissions by over 89,000 tonnes annually.

Nationally, Ireland has the potential for a biomethane industry, which would replace more than a quarter of natural gas on the national network, create significant new agri-income streams and reduce Ireland’s total emissions by almost four million tonnes per year - 6.5% of Ireland’s total emissions1.

Croí launches ‘Listen to Your Heart’ campaign to promote Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week

Thu, Sep 14, 2023

Ireland’s heart and stroke charity, Croí, has today launched Heart Valve Disease (HVD) Awareness Week. As part of HVD Awareness Week, Croí will be hosting four free stethoscope check events in Galway, Mayo, Limerick and Dublin. Croí expects to listen to over 1,000 hearts over the course of the week.

This marks an expansion from 2022 when Croí hosted one such event in Eyre Square in Galway. Croí listened to 300 shoppers’ hearts and a staggering 10% of those seen were referred to their GP for further tests. This was a worrying number given those 300 shoppers were seemingly healthy people who just happened to take advantage of the free check.

September means oysters in Galway as festival looms

Thu, Sep 14, 2023

Natives. Flats. Native flats. Ostrea edulis – whatever you call our native oysters they are as much a part of the food fabric and history of Ireland as our butter. Fatty yet not fatty. Nutty without any nuts. A hint of citrus without any fruit. And that unequalled lingering sweet iodine flavour. There is nothing quite like the Irish native oyster.

Increase in Garda numbers for Galway will be assured, says Naughton

Thu, Sep 14, 2023

Local TD and Government Chief Whip, Hildegarde Naughton, said that she will ensure that the numbers of Gardai in Galway will be increased in the coming months. She was speaking after a series of public order offences on the streets of Galway over the last week.

“Like everyone else, I was horrified to see the footage of the recent violent criminality in our City. While much of it is the responsibility of a few families, it has the potential to damage our city’s reputation nationally and internationally and has no place in a civilised society,” Minister Naughton said.

Only policing and respect can alter street behaviour

Thu, Sep 14, 2023

There has been only one topic of conversation in the city this week — and that is the fall-out from the incidents that took place over a few days last weekend. Because individuals have appeared before the courts in relation to those events, I am precluded from commenting specifically on them. However, my points this week will be based on the generality of the decline of behaviour on the streets of our main cities and towns, and what we need to do to make sure they are the exception rather than the norm. There is a real fear that someone’s life may be lost, whether a participant or an innocent bystander, as some incidents spill over into the public domain.
