The system used to determine the patronage of new schools needs to be reviewed to ensure education through the Irish langauge is available to all, according to Aire don Ghaeilge, don Ghaeltacht agus do na hÓilean, Seán Kyne.

The Minister, and Fine Gael Galway West TD, was speaking at the official opening of the new school for Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh in Knocknacarra, Galway city, which is one of the largest gaelscoileanna in the State.

Soapbox Science returns to the streets this weekend

Staff must be in place for HPC vaccine roll out in September, says McNelis

The Minister for Health, Simon Harris, must guarantee that the rollout of the HPV vaccine for boys in their first-year at secondary school will proceed in September, and that the HSE recruitment embargo he has put in place will not delay it.

This is the view of Labour Galway City West councillor Niall McNelis, who said the Minister can no longer stand over the embargo, especially as the vaccination is essential “to secure immunity and protect future generations”.

Funding for coastal protection works at Oran Island

Funding of €29,000 has been provided for coastal protection measures to be taken at Oran Island, Oranmore. The works will protect homes in the area from flooding and tidal events.

The funding was secured by the Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish, who has held a number of meetings with the Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Kevin Boxer Moran, and the Galway County Council officials, on this issue.

Long wait for physiotherapy service in Connemara

Eleven people are waiting for up to a year for physiotherapy services in Connemara, Inisbofin, and the Aran Islands. In all, there are 214 people awaiting these services in that region.

A total of 121 are waiting for up to 12 weeks, 59 are waiting for up to 26 weeks, while 23 are waiting up to 39 weeks, a meeting of the HSE’s Health Forum West was told this week.
