St Nicholas' to mark 700 years with seven days of bell ringing

Seven minutes bells at 7pm for seven Nights to mark historic church's major milestone

This Sunday, September 27, to mark the 700th year of St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, the church bells will sound out for seven minutes at 7pm for seven days.

The church's newly formed campanology - the art or practice of bell-ringing - school has been busy over the last year bringing the sound of the bells to Galway city. As well as the traditional New Year's Eve dining, the bells also sounded at 12 noon every Friday during the lockdown, as a symbol of support for frontline workers, and all those navigating through this difficult time.

The bell ringing has met with a positive response from the public, with many, both locally and nationally, tuning in for the live streaming. The bell ringing for the 700th anniversary will be live streamed on www.facebook.com/stnicholasgalway and people will be encouraged to donate online to the upkeep and maintenance of the church.

"The church is in great need of financial support at present," said the rector, the Very Rev Lynda Peilow [pictured above]. "This year has been challenging as we have had to close our doors to visitors and were not able to hold our fundraisers. No matter how small a donation, it would be greatly appreciated, and will help safeguard the church, as we are working hard also to ensure that St Nicholas’ will be around for another 700 years."
