NUI Galway has announced the winners of the 2015 Alumni Awards to be presented at the 15th annual Alumni Awards Gala Banquet on Saturday, March 7. The ceremony will take place on the campus at the Bailey Allen Wing located in Áras na Mac Léinn.

The winners of the six alumni awards to be presented at Gala 2015 include race walker Olive Loughnane who will receive the award for her contribution to sport. The Loughrea woman represented Ireland at four Olympic Games and six World Championships in the 20km racewalk. Ms Loughnane is a world champion in waiting have been recently awarded the Gold medal from the World Championship in 2009 following Russian athlete Olga Kaniskina’s suspension by the Russian Anti-doping agency.

Long awaited roadworks at Lough Atalia bridge will cause mayhem for commuters when they begin next month according to one city councillor.

It was confirmed at this week’s local authority meeting that adequate funding is in place for the work, which includes regrading and realigning the road running under the bridge. The improvement measures are taking place due to safety concerns, as the bridge was the location of several collisions in recent years.
