He was in his early 50s, a widower since the death of his beloved wife Anne in 1617, and the father of four daughters and a son, who carried his father’s name.

Galway City Council is now taking entries for the Galway City Tidy Towns and Garden Competition 2022, with some changes to previous years. The Residential areas category will now be the main focus of the competition with Residents Associations in each of the 3 sections taking away a prize fund of €300. In addition, the public and commercial buildings category will be replaced by one overall winner instead of the many sub categories previously.

Speaking on the changes, Tiarnan McCusker, Environmental Awareness Officer with Galway City Council said the Competition has been going strong since 1961 and although still proving popular, we felt there could be some changes to create an even stronger competition in the years ahead.

Domestic Violence Response Galway (DVR), a charity supporting women impacted by domestic abuse, recorded the highest number of clients in 2021 in its 24-year history, as well as its highest level of counselling support sessions.

The charity launched its new premises and expanded services in Moycullen on Monday when key findings from the 2021 annual report highlighted the impact of Covid-19 restrictions on the organisation and the women it supports. A total of 266 service users availed of the services in 2021, with a significant increase in return service users later in the year.

Canney calls on Department to expedite claims to educational sector workers

Seán Canney, Independent TD, has received complaints that school bus drivers and other educational sector workers have not been paid their entitlements for the Easter holidays due to a backlog within the Department of Social Protection with the processing of such claims.

He told the Advertiser that educational sector workers do not get paid during the school holiday period and have to claim Jobseeker’s Benefit for these periods.
