Headford raffle to raise funds to save Indian girls from exploitation

St Marys Church Headford/Claran in collaboration with Talitha Cumi Unnathi (little girl arise ), India, is hosting a raffle to help raise funds for the work being done by the organisation.

Talith Cumi Unnathi, which empowers women to transform communities by providing access to education, skills and confidence, is a project set up by Fr. Don Bosco Darsi from the Andrhra Pradesh region, India.

Its mission is to enable higher education to under privileged adolescent girls. Each year 4000 young catholic girls are trafficked. They are taken to Saudi, Qatar and other such countries and are used as domestic workers (slaves ) and many sadly are sexually exploited.

Experience has shown that many girls discontinue their education due to poverty, domestic violence, young marriages, learning disabilities, inadequacy of skills and discouragement as well as gender disparities. They are forced to marry at a very young age.

Talithacumi Unnati devotes its time, talent and treasure in transforming deprived, excluded and marginalized communities. It invests in girls’ higher education, allowing these young girls to become nurses/doctors/engineers etc etc. Higher education is expensive in India. $365 US educates one girl for a full year.

Those who can not read or write are not forgotten also. They are trained in skills such as tailoring. The charity donated up on 35 sewing machines to train young girls on the skill of sewing last year. This provides these poor vunerable families with a form of income.

Education is key to a brighter, healthier future for these young women.

The draw takes place in Claran Community Hall on Sunday March 19 after 11.30am Mass. €2 per ticket – three tickets for €5. Garda permission granted. Tickets can be bought from the parish office between 10am and 2pm, Mon – Friday @ 093-35448 or from https://www.tcuindia.org
