As the exam season approaches, oral examinations will be taking place over the coming weeks in the language subjects. A great deal of emphasis is placed on the spoken element of the language examinations, with between 20 and 25 per cent of the marks allowed for the oral element. A strong performance in the oral examinations can set students up for an excellent overall result in Irish, French, German, and Spanish. It is important, therefore, that students spend time preparing for their oral language examination. While students cannot predict what direction their conversation may take, there are a number of common themes and techniques which can be utilised to help improve performance.

With the introduction of the Government's free pre-school year under the ECCE scheme those working and managing childcare services are now required to enhance and upgrade their qualifications. Atlantic College Galway has responded to this need by introducing a range of FETAC courses in the early childhood care and education sector, the most popular being the FETAC Level 5 certificate in childcare and the FETAC Level 6 advanced certificate in childcare. These courses are delivered in Atlantic College on Saturdays, beginning March 26. The Saturday delivery is proving very popular with childcare students, many of whom are working in childcare services during the week and can dedicate Saturday to study.

It is a new dawn for the Galway People’s Resource Centre which is currently settling into its new premises at St Clare’s Walk, Merchant’s Road, Galway.
For the past 15 years the centre, a congress centre for the unemployed, has been providing help, support, and information to the public from its old premises in Canavan House, Nun’s Island. That help is set to continue and indeed progress further at its new Merchant’s Road location.
