There has been much written and said about the presence of the Occupy Galway camp in Eyre Square — and this week as they celebrated their 150th day on site, the debate has been ever more vociferous. With the dismantling of the Dublin camp and the voluntary evacuation of the Cork site, there is much pressure on the Galway site to do likewise, to say ‘we’ve done our bit, we’ve made a stance, but now we feel it is time to go’.

For most of their 150 days in the Square, they feel they have been misunderstood and that the greater population outside the camp just are not getting the cause for which they are fighting. This despite the fact that almost everyone outside the camp is experiencing daily the realities of the cause they are espousing.

Do you fancy spending a week living in Seattle, Washington? A TV production company is looking for a Galway family to do just that as part of a new reality series which sees residents from twinned towns swap lives for a week.

Twin Towns is an upcoming series centered on towns in the UK and Ireland which are twinned with towns and cities in the US, and will feature episodes on Galway and Seattle, London and New York, Manchester and Los Angeles, and Ennis and Phoenix, Arizona.

Woman pleads guilty to operating city brothel

A 34-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to operating a brothel in the city centre and has been remanded on continuing bail for sentencing.

Romanian national Monica Ciuciu with a confirmed address at 33 Cois Clair, Claregalway, appeared at Galway District Court on Monday where she entered the plea of guilty to the charge of acting or assisting in the management of a brothel on February 11 this year, contrary to Section 11 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 1993, at apartment 3, 15 Mary Street.
