Brian Walsh’s expulsion from the Fine Gael parliamentary party, and possible expulsion from the party proper, could pave the way for former Mayor Hildegarde Naughton to become the FG candidate in the city at the next General Election.
Dep Walsh, Fine Gael’s leading TD in Galway West, lost the party whip this week after voting against the Government’s Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill. It is understood party HQ has requested Dep Walsh to vacate his party office in Leinster House and he is also likely to be removed from the Oireachtas Transport Committee.

Five of County Galway’s nine TDs have shown a “disregard for the lives of women in their constituency”, by voting against the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill.
This is the view of Galway Pro-Choice, speaking following the vote on the second stage of the Bill in Dáil Éireann this week. Labour Galway West TD Derek Nolan has also expressed “disappointment” at his colleagues’ stance.

On Tuesday evening the Dail voted at second stage on the Protection of Life in Pregnancy Bill (2013). As expected four of our Fine Gael TDs (Peter Matthews, Brian Walsh, Billy Timmins and Terence Flanagan) very courageously voted against the Bill. Next week, I, too will vote against the abortion bill. More FG colleagues are expected to follow in the coming days.

People with HIV continue to experience stigma, discrimination and isolation, according to the manager of AIDS West.
John Flannery’s comments came as the organisation marked Irish AIDS day recently by taking to the streets distributing red ribbons to the public. These were used to show solidarity with people living with HIV and in memory of those who have died from the virus. A large red ribbon was on display at many iconic sites throughout the city.
