Don’t be blaming the septic tanks, says Harkin

The most recent inspections of septic tanks by the Environmental Protection Agency had revealed that their threat to the country’s drinking water had been substantially exaggerated and paled in significance with the damage being caused by 38 of Ireland’s largest sewage discharge systems that failed to meet treatment standard.

This was stated by independent MEP Marian Harkin when she welcomed the fact that 52% of the septic tanks considered to be a threat to the environment had passed inspection.

Father of two dies in crash outside his home in Connemara

Gardai are continuing their investigations following a fatal crash in Connemara earlier this week.

Mairtín McGrath was knocked down on the R320 road outside his home in Cill Chiaráin on Tuesday morning. It is understood he was talking to a friend when the collision occurred at around 11am. Emergency services rushed to the scene but Mr McGrath, who was in his fourties, was pronounced dead. His body was taken to University Hospital Galway for a post mortem examination.

You see people in the town, stopping and looking up at the sky and mouthing the words ‘blue’ , ‘bright’ and then moving on again and thinking of doing daft things like sitting outside at cafes and drinking a hot drink just hot enough to warm ya but not too hot to make you look ridiculous — you there sitting outside like a hard, braving this new fresh sensation. Like mammals peering out into the great brightness after the dark of winter, we stagger at first, unsure of what to do with this new found space and light and desire to do something other than that what we have been doing.
