Farmers granted access to National Reserve entitlements

Farmers who established holdings between 2008 and 2010, but who did not benefit from Installation Aid after it was discontinued, can now access National Reserve entitlements.

The decision by the Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney to extend the period from 2010 back to 2008 has been called “a common sense measure” and “just recognition” for work and investment of many farmers, according to Fine Gael Galway East TD Paul Connaughton.

NUI, Galway to reward elite athletes with CAO points

Following the success of the inaugural bonus points scheme last year, NUI Galway will again reward elite athletes with 40 CAO Performance Points in recognition of their skill, time and dedication in reaching the highest level of their chosen sport. This is an extension of NUI Galway’s current Elite Athlete Scholarship scheme which includes a subsistence grant, performance supports, gym membership and medical support.

The scheme will award 40 Performance Points to a limited number of athletes, applying for undergraduate courses, who meet strict criteria in a number of identified sports. The points will be added to a minimum requirement of 350 CAO Points from a single sitting of the Leaving Certificate in 6 subjects. The scholarship currently does not apply to GY501 Medicine. The closing date for applications is Tuesday, 31st March 2015.

Elite Sports Scholarships are available in a number of universities. These are very competitive but provide a great deal of resources and support for those interested in continuing with their sporting interests. Not all sports scholarships are elite, and closing dates vary according to the sport and the university. Other scholarships such as those for performing arts and creative arts are also available and are worth investigating, so do check carefully.
