Cad é an scéal? at The Skeff

The title of the event “Cad é an scéal” translates from Irish as “What’s the story?” and there will be liquid refreshment from The Skeff’s own aptly titled Scéal Ale and also from Pearse Irish Whiskey.

Athenry link road to open this week

Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney and Cllr Gabe Cronnelly have received confirmation that Galway County Council will open the new link road off the Athenry by-pass connecting Athenry Presentation College this week.

“This is good news for Athenry and the Presentation College,” said Minister Canney. “The road through the IDA land will allow for safe access to the school and also eliminate traffic congestion at the Raheen Woods Hotel entrance.”

Galway Hospice will hold its 14th annual Galway Memorial Walk on Sunday 8th September 2019.

The Memorial Walk will begin at 12noon from Claddagh Hall and take its traditional route to Blackrock and back, a distance of 6.5km. The Memorial Walk is Galway Hospice’s biggest annual fundraising event. Since it began in 2006, it has raised over €2million to help maintain essential Hospice services. Those who take part in the Memorial Walk do so in memory of a family member, friend or work colleague who has passed away, with many wearing the name of their loved one on special personalised t-shirts provided by the Hospice.

Galway businesses bear brunt of heavy rain

Businesses in Eyre Square were mopping up this week as severe rainfall over the Bank Holiday weekend led to unprecedented flooding in the area.

Bank of Ireland in Eyre Square and Eyre Square Dental Clinic were just two of the businesses forced to close as the overnight rainfall flooded their premises with the Galway Advertiser also experiencing water damage.

Bohermore watermain works will cause traffic disruption, says City Hall

A "rolling lane closure" on Bohermore/Prospect Hill, between 10am and 4pm throughout August is "the least disruptive" time period in which to carry out essential watermain rehabilitation works.

This is the view of the Galway City Council, which had considered a number of alternative options, which had considered carrying out the works at night, or only at weekends, but rejected these as night works meant "noise disruption in a residential area", and weekend works would result in the project taking longer to complete.

East Galway first for CLÁR responders groups to get funding

Eyrecourt and District Cardiac First Responders Group and Killascobe Community Defibrillator Group are set to benefit through funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development.

Eyrecourt and District Cardiac First Responders Group will receive €2,411 and Killascobe Community Defibrillator Group will receive €5,202. The funding is being issued under Measure 3a of the CLÁR programme, which is aimed at funding equipment and services for first responder groups.

Hanley accuses Government unwillingness to 'implement Airbnb rules'

The Government's unwillingness to introduce new enforcement rules on short-term letting and its willingness to be lobbied by Airbnb, shows it is "missing in action" when tackling "the multi-faceted aspects of the housing crisis".

This is the view of Social Democrats Galway City East councillor Owen Hanley, who was speaking after it emerged that the Government had "ignored expert advice" to introduce strong enforcement rules following lobbying by Airbnb during meetings with ministers.

Homelessness in the west increases as Simon launches new campaign

More than 500 people, including close to 200 children, in the west of Ireland are having to live in emergency accommodation, with the west the only region of the State to show an increase in the number of those homeless.

This is according to The Simon Community which has launched its Closing The Door On Homelessness campaign. It said the homeless and accommodation crisis in the west was "acute" with 534 people, including 199 children, in emergency accommodation in hotels, hostels and B&Bs at the end of June.
