What a hidden secret is Bristol. I had skirted through it on the Severn Bridge heading to Cornwall over a decade ago, but it was only last month when I discovered what a true delight it is. Blessed with beautiful weather, this time I got to see a vibrant cosmopolitan city that is being referred to in the UK as Little London, because it mirrors the energy and demographic of the capital city.

A team of students from NUI Galway's biomedical engineering master's programme have been selected for a global innovation competition run by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US. This is the first time a team from Ireland has been selected for the six month programme.
The IDEA² Global Programme provides transformative mentorship and expertise to emerging innovation leaders to develop their project ideas. Participating teams create projects that address compelling medical needs, and develop a broad network of connections and competitive financial pitching strategies. Teams often form companies as a result of the mentoring provided in IDEA2 Global.

On the eve of the Great Famine there was a terrible scandal in Kinvara, Co Galway. William Burke, who had served as a Catholic priest for 13 years, announced to his congregation that he was leaving the church and becoming Protestant. The people were so angry that about 2,000 pursued his carriage and hurled abuse at him. Two other clergymen and police protection were required to keep him safe.
Things were just about to get a little calmer when it was discovered that Burke had already married his wife Catherine while still priest, leading to his prosecution for ‘tendering an illegal oath’. A sensational court appearance ensued, and the case was dismissed.
