Great hotel offers for those travelling to the West — and not just for visitors

Thu, Apr 08, 2021

One of the few disadvantages for those of us fortunate enough to live in the West of Ireland is that we rarely get a chance to stay in a local hotel, as a tourist. That is likely to change this summer, as we will be encouraged to holiday closer to home, and many of us have ruled out foreign travel until 2022 at the earliest.

The temptation will be to look more closely at the options in our own areas, and to experience our local attractions and amenities through the eyes of a visitor to this place. Whether visiting Galway city from Mayo or the midlands, or leaving the city for a break in Connemara, Mayo, Clare or Athlone, many people were pleasantly surprised in 2020 at how much fun they had, holidaying at home.

Gardenwise | Upwardly Mobile – Spring Flowering Climbers

Tue, Apr 06, 2021

I love all of the signs of spring, but one of my absolute favourites is the new growth of climbing plants. The early shoots of clematis, honeysuckle and climbing roses have a way of gladdening the heart – I want to cheer them on as they climb, outwards and upwards, to embrace the new season. Climbers that flower in spring are especially valuable as they distract the eye from still-bare borders and from the messy brown foliage of bulbs that have just finished flowering.

Thu, Apr 01, 2021

Following the recent announcement of its global AACSB accreditation (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), NUI Galway’s JE Cairnes School of Business and Economics is now accepting applications for its 30% Club Scholarship for September 2021. Now in its fourth year, the scholarship aims to advance female leadership in business organisations and is a key influence in the increased number of female participants applying to and joining the university’s MBA programme.

The 30% Club Ireland was officially launched in January 2015 with a goal to achieve better gender balance at all levels of business in Ireland. In his interesting biography of Éamon de Valera,* Diarmuid Ferriter wrote that in December 2000 gardaí seized 24 love letters from de Valera to his young wife Sinéad, which were being advertised for auction by Mealy’s of Castlecomer. It was believed that the letters were stolen in the mid 1970s from the de Valera family home. The owners who had bought them in the UK some years previously in an effort to ensure their return to Ireland, were unaware that they were stolen.

Local hotels adopt safety first policy

Thu, Apr 01, 2021

‘If that goes well, then we can consider hospitality in June’, was the message on Tuesday from Tánaiste, Leo Varadkar, referring to the numbers for virus cases, in hospitals, new variants and vaccine rollout all going in the right direction in the coming weeks.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin agreed that the public can expect ‘to enjoy much greater freedom later in the summer’.
