Two Galway primary schools to participate in 2022 Explorers Healthy Oceans projects

The Explorers Education Programme team at Galway Atlantaquaria have announced that Scoil Iosaif Naofa, Oranmore, and Scoil Sailearna, Inverin, are among the top schools in 14 coastal counties that have been selected to complete an Explorers Healthy Oceans project, and be in with a chance of winning a Marine Institute’s Explorers Ocean Champion Award for primary schools in Ireland.

Scoil Náisiúnta Leitir Mealláin, is among six schools nationwhide selected to participate in Your Gallery at School 2022 at the National Gallery of Ireland. Following a successful programme in 2021, the gallery will bring art to classrooms across the country once again this year, thanks to continued support from global aircraft leasing company SMBC Aviation Capital.
Other schools selected to take part are St Colmcille's Primary School, Templemore, Co Tipperary; Mount Sion CBS Secondary School, Waterford city; St Brigid's and St Patrick's National School, Drogheda, Co Louth; Enniscorthy Community College, Co Wexford; and St Paul's Special School, Cork.

The Penny Dinners committee was a name given to a voluntary group who used to provide free dinners for 40 to 80 impoverished children four times per week in the late 1920s and early 1930s. In fact the title was a misnomer, in no sense were they penny dinners. The children could not afford to give a penny for them, nor could the committee provide a dinner for a penny. The funding for these meals came from the people of Galway and also from fundraising productions they put on, mostly in the Columban Hall.
