This is the first article in a series that will cover 20th century design icon objects and furniture. In this first one, we will review the Lampe Berger which was invented more than 100 years ago to counter the proliferation of bacteria in hospital wards.
In 1898 a French chemist named Maurice Berger created the catalytic technology still used today in Berger Lampes to eliminate airborne odours created by smoking, cooking, pets, and other common sources. The flameless burning of the lamp using a unique alcohol-based fuel not only freshens and purifies the air, but releases one of many available fragrances. The performance of these lamps is spectacular and the beauty of them is that they come in hundreds of shapes and usually look like an objet d’art, a sculpture, or even like an antique piece of porcelain.

In 1845, when Sir Robert Peel was in office, an act was passed providing for the establishment of three Queen’s colleges “In order to supply the want, which has long been felt in Ireland, of an improved academical education, equally accessible to all classes of the community without religious distinction”. Three faculties were established in each… arts, law, and physic (medicine). The colleges were strictly undenominational, and the professors were forbidden by the statutes to make any statement disrespectful to the religious convictions of their classes, or to introduce political or polemical subjects.

A selection of students from Shane Fitzgibbon’s “Connacht Taekwon-do Schools” recently attended the International Irish Championships in Neptune Stadium, Cork. With representation from seven European countries, the standard was extremely high. The local group held their own however to bring back a fine haul of silverware. The Galway instructors who attended were Shane Fitzgibbon (Galway and Oranmore), Lisa Connolly (Labane & Kinvara), Sally Whelan (Barna) and Sandra Doyle (Loughrea). The results were as follows: Black belt results —Shane Fitzgibbon – Gold, silver, bronze; Cillian Howard (Oranmore) – bronze; Shannon Holland (Galway) – bronze; Kenneth Duignan (Galway) – bronze; Cathal Kilbane (Galway) - silver; Jason Costello (Oranmore) - bronze; Sandra Doyle (Galway) - bronze; Ciaran Doyle (Galway) - bronze.
