People of the Tribes: Meet Cayla.

Thu, Mar 28, 2019

Hi, my name is Cayla O’Neill Ruane, I was born in Galway 16 years ago and I have been living in the small village of Oughterard ever since. I have never been what someone would describe as ‘normal’, being an only child growing up, I always had to find ways to entertain myself without needing anyone around. I would read, create my own stories and act them out with my vast collection of dolls or make dances to show my mom when she got home from work. Living in Oughterard was difficult when I was younger, I didn’t have a lot of friends at school and there were very little activities for someone like me to participate in. Instead,I looked forward to the trip into Galway each weekend, as there was always so much to do and see in the city, even though it was through the confines of a Tesco shopping trolley.

People of the Tribes: Meet Alex.

Mon, Mar 25, 2019

Hello, my name is Alex Browne. I am 16 years old and I have been living in Galway my entire life. I originally lived in Corrach Buí, but then I moved to Manusflynn in the country when I was around five. I do not remember much about Corrach Buí because I was so young and it was such a long time ago. The one thing I do remember is the colourful neighbours I had while living in Corrach Buí. They all had very unique personalities that made them all stick out, a quite common character trait for Galway people. Manusflynn, where I currently live is just as lovely as Corrach Buí, it is quite a small area next to Charlistrane and Headford. It is home to a few farmers, and all though I myself am not a farmer, this did not stop the farmers from greeting me with hospitality when I first moved in, this is a prime example of the caring people that reside in Galway.

Spring Garden Blues

Mon, Mar 25, 2019

Have you ever noticed how hard it is to have enough blue in the garden? Nature seems to favour yellows, pinks and whites, and even in the wild, blue and purple flowers tend to be outnumbered – with the exception of course, of the carpets of bluebells you might find in a deciduous woodland in springtime. I’m always looking for ways to

The Galway General Omnibus Company

Thu, Mar 21, 2019

The first regular public transport service in Galway was run by the Galway and Salthill Tramway Company which started business on October 1, 1879, and by 1885 was being used by in excess of 105,000 passengers per year. During World War I, most of the company’s best horses were commandeered by the British Army and there was more and more competition from motorised vehicles, so the tramway ceased trading in April 1918.

Padraic Ó Conaire could write ‘pretty racy stuff’

Thu, Mar 21, 2019

Week III
Although Padraic Ó Conaire often had the look of an angel, he could write pretty racy stuff. His book Deoraíocht (Exiles) ranks as one of the most colourful and audacious Irish language novels ever written. He presented a different Ireland in this and other books, an Ireland riddled with envy, alcoholism, terminal poverty and destitution, mental illnesses, emotional and physical abuse As they sank into anonymity, the ‘exiles’ experience the successes and failures of their new life. Published in 1910, it reflected real life, its sorrows and struggles. At a time when book-banning was seen as an attempt to keep Ireland pure and ‘clean,’ the book was immediately banned.

Sunday lunch at The Ardilaun

I will admit straight off that I am no stranger to making myself at home in The Ardilaun. You cannot beat it for location in leafy Taylor's Hill. It is intimate and friendly, the hotel lobby is like a gigantic comfy sitting room. As far as the food goes, this hotel has it covered from morning to night. It comes as no surprise that the menus in The Ardilaun are a cut above the usual hotel fare.

Antibiotics may not be the best treatment for acne

Thu, Mar 21, 2019

Taking antibiotics for your acne is a huge mistake, according to Therese Moylan, an acne expert who has 25 years' experience treating acne.

If you have acne and you have seen your doctor about it, chances you were put on the antibiotic merry-go-round: first you start with one; when that stops working, you move on to another, and still another; or maybe you stay on antibiotics for years. And you still have acne. Why? Because antibiotics give temporary improvement and they kill most, but not all, of the bacteria, and the acne becomes severe again, and since each antibiotic becomes less effective over time, in the end you wind up with no options left.
