Thu, Sep 24, 2020
The tall building in the centre of our picture of New Docks Road taken in 1903 was known as “Gas Tank” Flaherty’s pub. We presume he got his nickname because of the gasworks across the street. It was here that the distinguished English painter Augustus John lived for several weeks in 1914. He did a lot of painting and drawing around the city and especially the docks area, but when the World War I started, he began to worry that the locals would regard him as an English spy, so he went back to England.

Thu, Sep 24, 2020
Augusta Lady Gregory, writer, folklorist and great patron of the arts, who died at her home at Coole Park in 1932, reappeared during the Druid production of five of her plays each evening this week. Druid is no stranger to magic, and such is their skill that Lady Gregory (Marie Mullen) makes several appearances inviting the audience to follow her for yet another of her plays performed in different locations around her home. From the edge of Coole lake to the old stables and yards, her ghostly figure seductively beckoned. The audience followed enchanted, moved by the strange power of her deceptively simple plays.

Starting a new business is always a bit of a leap of faith, and considering the current climate it’s a more daunting challenge than ever. But for Aine, a love for painting and teaching spurred her on to take up that challenge.“I had been having small painting get togethers with friends in my house before lockdown. I loved creating a relaxing environment where we could paint and discuss art together.
"One day, my 10yr old daughter asked if she could paint at an easel like ‘Mom’ , soon she had friends calling over wanting to do the same.I thought to myself, wow, there could be a business opportunity here, but I probably wouldn’t have done anything more about it if it hadn’t been for Lockdown.

The achievements of students of all ages and abilities were safely celebrated at the Kumon 2020 Awards held at the Galway Greyhound Stadium. Presentations were made in single household groups who stood for a photoshoot (by Murtography) with the Mayor of Galway City, Cllr. Michael Cubbard while the entire ceremony was livestreamed (by SoundtoLight) to the cars of the waiting families, and indeed, to their friends and relatives across the globe.
The Kumon programmes in Maths and English are completely individualised, finding the just right start point for each student from a diagnostic assessment. The student progresses through doing a small amount of work daily, (20 minutes or less) at a pace best suited to that student. The programme is designed to encourage independent learning, and over time, with committed study, many students work far ahead of their age.

Toy Corner will be open one year at the end of October and what a year it has been! Our primary focus has, and continues to be, ‘toys powered by imagination’. We believe in the value of real, imaginative play for children to aid them in their development at all ages. With that in mind, we stock toys that will last, promote family play time, and most importantly, guarantee tons of fun. We’ve been really busy over the last few months finding lots of wonderful new products, and building more space to put them! If you haven’t been in since before the summer you must plan a visit soon, we’ve made so many additions and our range is growing every week.

Tue, Sep 22, 2020
It’s getting to the time of year when berries abound on plants both wild and cultivated. This is when they can be enjoyed in the ornamental garden and hedgerow – visually, at least. A few weeks further on and a cold snap will see them stripped off by hungry birds, but just now, as the season turns and the leaves begin to do likewise, the jewel like clusters still adorn the branches.

Now that GAA club games are being played again, we thought to show you the county champions of 1936, Wolfe Tones. They were a city based team who also won the championship in 1941 but after that they seemed to fade out. Another city team of the period, Galway Gaels, who were champions in 1930, also faded out in the 1940s. Maybe some of the members of both clubs joined Father Griffins which was founded in 1948.

For any visitor to Dublin in the early 19th century, to miss seeing the great Daniel O’Connell would have made their visit almost worthless. William Makepeace Thackeray, on the threshold of becoming one of the greatest writers of the English language, spent three months touring Ireland in 1842 collecting his impressions of the ‘manners and the scenery’ of the country and its people, for his successful Irish Sketch Book published some years later. Back in Dublin at the conclusion of his tour he lost no time heading to the Mansion House to see the Liberator in person.*

The three keys to a genuine weight loss (fat loss) plan are diet, exercise, and metabolism correction. All three keys interconnect – one will not work without the other. Your metabolism is the most powerful of all the three keys – it is the ‘switch’ that controls everything else. In most people this switch is off.
Metabolism problems such as slow thyroid, type 2 diabetes, sluggish liver, hormone imbalances, PCOS, endometriosis, infertility, and digestive problems such as constipation, IBS, and diverticulitis will limit or stop your weight loss, no matter how much dieting or exercise you do.
